One of the bonuses of the PlayStation Network over Xbox Live is the fact you don’t have to pay for anything on the service. Live has premium services that only come with a subscription which many gamers do not like.
But PlayStation 3 owners might be about to get a shock as Sony in considering a similar two-tier approach.
Kaz Hirai, president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., has suggested a possible subscription model alongside the free PSN service during a call with investors. He said:
SCE will further increase sales by offering users new entertainment through the combination of hardware, software, peripheral and PlayStation Network. Especially in the on–line area, we are studying the possibility of introducing a subscription model, offering premium content and services, in addition to the current free services.
For the moment there is no detail about what services would be charged for and when such a subscription would be introduced.

Matthew’s Opinion
Before anyone starts getting angry that PSN might be going the way of Xbox Live; remember that there was no mention of games in that statement given by Kaz. He just says premium content and services.
Sony is trying to grow the PS3 beyond just being a gaming console, so it could well be that any games-related services on PSN remain in the free area. The premium content could come from TV episodes, movies, music downloads etc. So you pay a subscription and get 6 streamed movies to watch, or unlimited streaming music, for example.
I am hoping that differentiation is made because then PSN will still have that advantage over Xbox Live for gamers. If you want to use your PS3 for more than games then the premium services and subscription model is there if you want to use it.
