More to the point, the actors looked NOTHING at all like the the characters, and the special effects didn’t even resemble what skills they used in the manga or anime…. I take it you all missed the fact that it was called dragonball evolution for a reason,evolution meaning it was based on dragonball but NOT the same as it was changed to fit with a live action movie. If they made it look the same as the anime it would look fucking shit. Its not a bad first attempt but does need some major improvements and a bigger buget :>

And still, they are making a sequel. they green lit the sequel even before the movie came out. One wonders why, but since the green light was still being thrown around earlier, one has to wonder if, a)fox is making it a global effort to save this movie, b) hoping it is a endurance movie then a instance box office hit C) the budget wasn’t 100 million and they were lying through their teeth, D) The sequel is a giant f**k you to the people who illegal downloaded or bought X-men origins wolverine and said they did it to punish fox for Dragonball Evolution. Needless to say, there is a sequel on the way, despite the hate, so buckle yourself in, this ride ain’t over yet, despite how much it fails.
I went to watch this movie with friends just so we could make fun of it. I wish we hadn’t because I felt somehow like I had been raped after it was over.

The twist at the end of the movie is that “Osaru” the disciple and servant of Picollo is actually the transformed Goku. Yeah, it doesn’t make any sense in the movie either.

First, to all those you have said the people who made the movie should die are being idiots. You should never hope someone dies just because they failed at making a movie. You should laugh or cry which ever, and then move on. It’s not a big deal, it’s just a freaking movie that failed. No reason to tell people that they should ‘commit suicide and burn their writers.’
Second, we all knew that this movie was going to suck just by the trailers. Anybody who watches DBZ would have been able to see that from the beginning. Doing a live action movie based off of an anime is probably always going to suck until better CGI and other crap is better. We should all just stop expecting it to be good really.

I don’t care what anyone thinks, that guy who played goku didn’t do that bad, besides roshi, it was the best performence in the movie.
Really no one gave it a chance, that’s why it’s an epic fail. People just jumped on the band wagon and just started dissing it.
I gave it a 5.5/10. It wasn’t the best, but it was a decent attempt at live-action movie(which if you didn’t know, is vary hard to pull off)

Depends, some anime could do very well in live action, america just never take the right ones.
For instance, a drama manga in a “normal” world, Japan made some decent live actions movies.
Some manga I personally think could do well in american live action - Black Lagoon, done right it could be THE shit.

hmmm, what makes it unique? its just like any other movies around, bombarded with effects. we dont want another matrix movie here. we want the real story line, real chracters’ persona, and the real DBZ here. what a shame to the real creators of this anime.
Ok first of all, those of you who think it’s about DBZ you need to do your research, this movie in strictly based on Dragonball. Second of all we all know that there was no way the movie producers were going to satisfy all of our expectations as hardcore fans; that is just impossible. Thirdly this is the first time anyone has attempted such a feat at such a caliber, because of us the fans. I went in as a movie fan, not as a Dragonball fan, and it made all the difference. There were little parts here and there that made many references to the series. The movie was awkward, corky, and silly; which to me sounds a lot like the original Dragonball series. That was what made the movie great. All the necessary elements were there: energy blasts, transformations, flying, training, tournaments, capsule corp., insane fast fighting, Shenlong’s summon, someone being brought back to life by the dragonballs, Roshi being a pervert, and so much more. No matter what you say, no matter how much you complain everything was there. This was a Hollywood movie, not some perfect adaption made by some crazy rich hardcore fan. There is no such thing as a perfect movie, and there never will be. This project is scheduled to be a trilogy, so suck it up and just b grateful this project was even approved and given the green light. We could have no Dragonball at all. To conclude my rant about all those else who cal themselves “so called Dragonball fans” All the people who worked so hard to produce the film I(including the actors) deserve some respect, it took money, sweat, blood, tears, and a lot of patience to make the world of Dragonball come alive. All these comments so many have given, is like a spit to the face to all the producers, including original creator Akira Toriyama, that’s right he helped WRITE it, HE gave he genius to write the screenplay. Do you want to spit in his face? I didn’t think so.
First I wanted to throw it out there, that not all Live action movies suck. The Death Note movies were actually pretty good, I for one, loved them, even thought I thought I wouldn’t.
Secondly as for this movie and the post by “db”. Yes, yes I spit on his face for agreeing to have this piece of filth touch the theaters. It’s his fault too it bombed.
You mention that we should be thankful, and satisfied with the fact they even MADE the movie?. WRONG. I personally would have preferred two things:
1) If it was because of “The writers strike” like someone mentioned, for them to have waited and done the damn thing right, and more to satisfy the fans than the average movie goer.
2) That they didn’t make it at all if they were going to change so much about the actual story. (Come on, the Dragon balls, made by sages or w/e? Goku being a coward? please)
Its one thing, to take a story well known by many people, and change a few things, that is normal and happens all the time with all adaptations. But its completely different to take a story, throw it out the window, and make shit up, like they did here.
All-in-all I think they should have taken more time to think about how to come up with the film, and as I previously said, stick with the actual story.
The majority of people that would have given this film a huge box office success, would have been fans of the series, who know what DB is about, correct? then how could the people who made it, forget something so important as to not want to please THEM first, by not changing it up so much.

Stephen Chow is a very capable director and Producer but whoever gave the order for a caucasian to play Goku and put him in a high school, needs to be murdered. Those are the precise reasons the movie failed. Shortsightedness and racial discriminations.

All-in-all, the only thing I think this movie has to do with the originals, are the name of things. By that I mean, character names, “Capsule corp”, Shenron, Nameks, etc.
PS: This movie was so bad, that it made me want to start watching DB-DBZ-DBGT all over again, so I can suppress how horribad this shit was.

I recently watched a video made by a student who was very upset about a school book that he had to suffer through. The way that he dealt with his anger was by shooting it several times with pistol and then he preceded to fire flaming arrows at it. This was done until the book was totally destroyed. I would really like to see how this guy would react if he had watched something as horrible as this movie.

I didnt bother going to the movies for this db crap. Piccolo didnt even have antenae! cant tell if hes a martian or an actual namek. Yamcha’s friend Puar? where Oolong go? Krillin alive? Bottom is the try was there and it totally FAILS. I can accept a little change to the story and make it theyr own way, but they pushed way too far. I actually want to see this. I watched DB as a kid with my friends and we’re all going to see it. Mostly though, we’re going to have something to laugh at.
I read somewhere that the reason they gave the thumbs up for the “sequel” was because they were going to make that one more loyal to the actual storyline.
Hopefully that is accurate and take they make the next one they planed and make it awesome, with what we all know and love of Dragonball.

I don’t see what the big deal is about Goku being white. In db he was an alien not asian. Bulma not having blue hair was fine. She did have a blue streak in her hair. Really a full head of blue hair has no place in a live action movie. Chi chi was super hot. The casting wasn’t really bad. (Goku needed some serious help)There were plenty of nods to the original db series but they had some glaring changes. The movie was horrible, under budgeted and needed some major script revisions. I’ve seen better cgi done by high school students. This shouldn’t have been done but a small overseas film company(even if they are owned by fox).

the reason the sequel was green lit is because of the foreign box office. its already made 37 mill overseas and with the us 4.7 mill, it totals to 42 mill.if this movie was promoted more in this country it would have done better.

Well seeing as hollywood has run out of ideas these past years its no wonder they wish to make live action animes movies only for their own profit by outsourcing and taking ideas from another country rather than being bothered to create something really special and unique but not too cliche but hey thats holywood for you all it is about is money money money without a care of what movie they mimic and in the process pissing off the fanbase of the movie they mimic. But u gotta remember nothing a director copies from someone is exactly like what they copied, it wouldn’t be original otherwise. From the word LIVE ACTION, they just made a REAL LIFE ADAPTATION for christ’s sake. have you people even seen lightning fast movements in real life0, or worst, can you do 10-15 backflips for only about 2-3 secs (efffects can do that by f.forwarding but that’s even worse!!!)???? Well anyway, too much of something really is stupid, like expecting too much like making a complete copy of Goku, which is kinda weird/dumb-looking (imagine that.. O_O). So, come on people, get your facts straight. But, not everything i say is positive, i admit that they overdid the slow/fast motion effects, i think they should have done more quick (not anime fast, but humenly fast) fight choreography instead of effects (like the fight scenes of Jackie chan without comedy, Jet Lee or the Ong Bak person), but i did like the energy/ka-boom effects ( sparkly 0.0). SO, never compare anime/manga versions to movie adaptations. but IF, only IF, there is a Live action naruto i say that summoning jutsus will be difficult in terms of pleasing audiences such as these, i feel sorry for you all, disappointed dbz ANIME diehard fans..
In short, choreography > effects for anime adapted movies, to reduce disappointed diehards..

Also most of your complaints are beyond retarded, actually no that’s an insult to the mentally impaired. It’s more like rocks having a conversation. For the slow ones it means little to nothing of substance has been said from you.
The general rabid fanboy/girl complaint can be summed up to “no tail, goku has an education/highschool(which for the record he did know how to read and write in the comic), bulma doesn’t have blue hair, picollo doesn’t have antennas, no krillin, and goku isn’t a kid.(I’m ignoring the white goku bit because its so abysmally ignorant of a complaint to even justify) In which everything can be summed up with you’re idiotic fanboys who believe that dragonball was pure gold despite the series as a whole being cheesy as shit, lighthearted, and wacky because it was a SHOUNEN comic. Which means targeted towards little kids and mid teens so that right there shows you what your biggest problem. You’re not able to get rid of your nostalgia factor that would allow you to hear the words “Toriyama can’t write for shit” without exploding. Besides Tezuka was a way superior writer in every way.

@Dwizard Actually I am a fan of dragonball and dragonball z. I first watched dragonball z when it came on saturday mornings(I completely forget what channel it came one that was a shitlong time ago) and then continued to watch it on Toonami. It was funny to me because after dragonball z kept going to the middle of the freeza saga Toonami finally decided to show dragonball as well, and shortly after that series finished new episodes of dragonball z started to appear on the channel. Point is I know full well the merits of the series, but unlike the rabid fanboy like you are I’m actually able to look at a series objectively. Did I like it a lot when I was a kid; YES, dear god yes I did, but then I grew up and I read better stories and realized how primitive Dragonball is in terms of story and character development. By today’s standards the whole story is mediocre at best, and the movie was absolutely nothing like say, going up to the statue of david with a bulldozer and hitting it full force. So to properly explain the original point of my first post was that a lot of the fanboys couldn’t look past their nostalgia filter that makes them think the series is pure and total gold the way it is despite much better series coming out, and much better writing in said series. Also love how you can fully ignore the difference between adaptation and retelling.
Guys, seriously, its was an average film, I’m a DBZ fan, watched pretty much all the series, Dragonball and Dragonball GT, bought a few of the games myself, and decided i’d go see the film with my friends, for the hell of it. To be honest, the beginning of the film was awesome, even thought they ruined the original story and put goku in high school, the fight scene at the party, gramp goku and goku fighting at the beggining, no major CG effects, but it was a nice fun visual, filled with goku like humour who refuses to fight unless needed and with the hair scene THEN piccolo came along with bulma, and it seemed to drop dramatically, the end fight sucked balls, no fighting in it at all really apart from a hug in mid-air and a few punches, then a crapply CG super nova and kamamaha and then a cheat rip of the original Dragonball episodes, and the reason I think this happened was because when they started the film, they made it nice and solid, but then as it got more public, more pressure from fan boys came along and they fucked it up somehow, and another thing I didn’t like was how they changed the story (which seemed decent) but didn’t really explain any of it at all. It is not a bad film, they fucked up somewhere half way through which made it flop, and hopefully they will improve it on the second film, which I think will have Vegeta and the Saiyans in it?
so lets stop this bullcrap, laugh, or cry depending on your mode, and move on and wait for other good and bad films to come out ^^

Reading your posts it seems a lot of you are making bad assumptions and mistakes about this movie. First off its not based on Dragonball Z, its based on Dragonball. Second it is not, (i repeat) NOT DIRECTED BY STEPHEN CHOW! It was directed by the hack who made The One, and those shitty Final Destination movies. Had Chow actually directed this movie it would have been good.
On the issue of Son Goku being white, that is lame. But not as lame as the “but he is an alien” excuse. If thats the case than you should’nt have any problem if Will Smith plays Klark Kent in the next Superman film, he is alien after all amirite?
Frankly this movie is trash. It wasn’t made for Dragonball fans as much as it was made to cash in on the Dragonball name, and it even failed at that. It’s Dragonball in name ONLY. They could have made their own original action movie about some martial arts kid in HS and not slapped the Dragonball name on it at all. I hope that they learn a lesson with this flop, and not mae the same mistake with the upcoming Cowboy Bebop movie.

i went to see it at the theater and it was not what i was hopping for. i did like Master Rochie and piccolo and liked that Master R. was a dirty old man. But the biggest thing i hated was the fact that they needed a bigger budget for this movie, so they could really do the fight and powers some justice and then the ending was really bad. I hope that they can learn from there big mistake and really make the second one like u see in the anime. all and all it was not the worst movie i have ever seen but it was not the greatest ether.

Like many of us I grew up with Dragon Ball and Dragon ball Z.
Everyone I knew would get together and check out how cool it was when Goku went ballistic and saved the day, and we all looked up to his happy optomistic attitude.
Plus they could all fly around and shoot badass looking beams all over the place.
The show was ridiculously epic and it always kept us hanging for days and days, waiting to see if the spirit bomb really would kill Frieza or if Gohan’s kamehameha would take down Cell.
Now, I realize that movies in America have to be all “Hollywood” and shit, but why did they have to ruin something that children everywhere have been waiting years and years and years for; the day when a live action version of their favorite show could come to the big screens.
Back then it seemed like that would make it come to life;
it would make it like DBZ was real, if only for an hour or so.
but no, that dream was too much to ask.
not only did they trash that dream but they shit all over the name of dragon ball and everything it represented to tons of fans all across the world.

Now, some of you are trying to give the movie some credit, that’s not a thing you do when they simply just stole a name of a famous anime, they screwed with the story line, they made too many noticeable changes, I should know because I never actually saw any trailers, I just happened to walk by a theater showing it in 5-10 minutes.
I’m not gonna say some garbage like “i`m a great DB/DBZ/DBGT” or some stupid shit like that, i`m not. However this movie was terrible by all means in an attempt to please the obvious target, the fans.
Fox should probably just drop this if any of them are smart, but that is unlikely, at least at the current time.

I can’t speak for anyone else but, for me, the white Goku was a deal-breaker. It could have gotten the greatest reviews in the history of film, and i still wouldn’t have paid a dime in support of this kind of cinematic colonialism.
